Think it’s time to start your own business?
Former Dragon Sarah Newman spoke to some of Cork’s top business people last week about her personal experience in business when setting up Needahotel.com.
Operating out of a one-bedroom flat with two small kids she built one of the most successful companies of the dot.com era. She started with zero funding and went on to grow the company’s annual turnover to a staggering 100 million. When asked, Sarah why did you decide to start your own business… she answered quite simply that she had no choice – she had two small children and she needed an income.
And there we have it, lack of choice, perhaps the greatest motivator of all time. And indeed maybe this is your motivation and why you’ve decided to start your own business.
The job or business that was, no longer is. But the bills keep coming.
As Cork solicitors and business legal advisors, we are meeting an increasing number of people that through circumstance or choice have decided to start your own business.
And for those ready to take the leap, help is all around.
Enterprise Boards throughout Ireland run courses on everything from how to start your own business to online marketing and offer mentoring and funding opportunities. The Avondhu Blackwater Partnership recently appointed new business advisor John McCarthy who brings a wealth of expertise, experience and enthusiasm to this role and is definitely a man worth talking to! Cork City and regional Chambers of Commerce offer networking and support opportunities for members. And if that wasn’t enough, most mornings or evenings throughout the city and county you’ll find a networking group meeting up somewhere.
So if you’ve made the decision to start your own business help is all around.
You just have to get out there and look for it.
Is building your business going to be easy? Not at all! It takes time and lots of hard work. But you start with a plan and you decide to make things happen. As Thomas Edison said The three things that are most essential to achievement are common sense, hard work and stick-to-it-iv-ness….
So use your head, get going and stick to it.
With the right plan you too can start your own business.
